I'm a writer and researcher. I wish I could give a succinct description of what that means for this website but I can't because sometimes I'm thinking about hardcore theory and sometimes I'm writing verse about personal trauma. Most often I'm just trying to remind myself that worth doesn't come from productivity or utility. Part of Slant Postscripts is about embracing and creating something from that.

I have always loved words and books but I am conscious of the dangers that arise when they exist in a vacuum. I have trouble approaching literature without thinking about the social and cultural structures that it grows from and impacts. On the other hand, I also think reading is a profoundly personal experience that creates bonds through subjectivities and interpretations. Somewhere between these is a relationship with language I'm constantly exploring and writing about.

This is why Slant Postscripts is about literary and historical stories. Both the world we live in and we ourselves are made up of narratives. Some we create, some existed before us, some are forced upon us. In a sense then, when we talk about culture or art or creativity, we are making up meta-stories about other larger stories. I love the idea that in doing this we have the power to foster not only connection and understanding but also resistance and change. We may even envision fundamental alterations to these larger stories.

So what is Slant Postscripts? It's a collection of postscripts to stories: stories in books, stories from history, stories of people. Not footnotes that exist at the bottom of a page or on a completely seperate one, but postscripts that may come after the original narrative and expand upon or create dialogue with it. The name came in part from the Emily Dickinson poem that implores the reader to "Tell all the truth but tell it slant" because "Success in Circuit lies ... The Truth must dazzle gradually, Or every man be blind". In such few lines, Dickinson so profoundly signals the potential of the poetic and subjective. I also like to think there is a small nod to the women who might just be the key to doing this.

On a more personal note: My pronouns are she/they. I currently reside in Naarm (Melbourne) on Wurundjeri land that was never ceded. In researching I work mostly on nineteenth century fiction by women and especially love the gothic genre.

You can find my briefer book reviews on Goodreads.

I'm also the editor of Non-Fiction & Poetry at the Australian Women Writers Challenge.

Changes in consciousness begin with art and take shape through discussion of art. But the process takes a long time and involves a lot of people working in many small ways. – Phyllis Rose

The land on which I reside and the land my ancestors arrived on was never ceded, it was and always will be Aboriginal land. I acknowledge the inherent racism of concepts such as literature and history, and the unjust structures of power at play in the telling of stories.
